Top Summer Destinations Australia

There’s never been a better time to explore our own backyard than now.  For some, that means bringing an #emptyesky and heading to one of the fire-affected towns, to help support and rebuild their economy. For others, maybe it’s just visiting one of the states other than the one they live in. There are so many reasons to visit places in Australia, and the lack of jet lag is only one. Here, we share our favourite holiday destinations in Australia so you can get inspired for your next vacay. Oh, and if that holiday is too far away, you can at least capture your summer glow with a tube of The Bronzer in the meantime. Just saying.

Wineglass Bay, Tasmania

Tassie may not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think of “summer” but that’s precisely why we like it so much. Set in the national park and boasting the kind of perfect white sand you think only exist in the movies, you have to hike to get there, but that makes it all the more worth it. Yes, the temperature won’t get as steamy as the northern states, but you also won’t get the crazy crowds, empty chip packets and the fights for your square inch of space on the beach there either. Instead, you’ll more than likely only have to share the beach with a few others (if at all!), the vibe will be serene and the backdrop –  absolutely breathtaking.

Broome, WA

One of the best places to visit in Australia, Broome is like experiencing Australia on a whole different level. In the Kimberley region of WA, Broome and its surroundings are home to some of the most visually stunning and diverse landscapes you’ll ever see (gorges, canyons, beaches – all of it!). One of the most incredible parts of this region is the rich Aboriginal history, which you are able to learn about from a local indigenous tour guide. Broome is also home to the stunning Cable Beach (which you can even ride along on camelback) and you’ll also be privy to one of the most stunning sunsets your eyes will ever witness.

Byron Bay, NSW

It wouldn’t be an Australian holiday destination list if Byron didn’t make an appearance. In the last decade Byron’s popularity has exploded, and with it, a new foodie heaven. Have a coffee and a delicious organic bowl of goodness at Folk, a farm to table lunch feast at The Farm or try your luck scoring a reservation at the hottest restaurant in the region, Fleet. And of course, you haven’t really been to Byron if you haven’t had a cocktail and photo at the famous Rae’s on Watego’s. Don’t forget to also check out the neighbouring towns of Brunswick Heads, Newrybar and Bangalow for a more local feel – and even more delicious things to eat. Oh, and it also has stunning beaches and incredible shopping too… so you may just want to extend your trip

Apollo Bay, VIC

Are you even Australian if you haven’t been on the Great Ocean Road? This is definitely a road trip for the bucket list because there is so much to do along this stunning coastline. And, while there are many amazing places to stay along the way (we also love the cute Wye River, Lorne and Aireys Inlet), Apollo Bay has just the right amount of local, combined with great beaches and good food. But, what makes this one of the best holiday destinations in Australia is its relative distance to the other incredible sights of the region like the Otways National Park (15 minutes by car) and the Twelve Apostles (an hour and a half’s drive).

Lord Howe Island, NSW

600km off the coast of NSW, to the east of Port Macquarie lays one of the most beautiful pockets of  Australia: the island wonderland, Lord Howe Island. Dubbed the “Hawaii of Australia”, the world heritage-listed island is the sort of place you go to, where you feel like you’re far, far away from Oz, yet the flight there is only a couple of hours. It’s full of postcard scenery: clear sparkly water, volcanic peaks, coral reefs, incredible forests, and wildlife (especially birds) that you’ve only seen in pictures. You can laze on one of their epic beaches, snorkel to your heart’s content (Ned’s beach is one of the best for this), or go on a hike if you’re feeling energetic. One thing is for sure, this is one destination you’ll definitely leave feeling rejuvenated… and already wanting to return.

Capture that summer glow…
